Give it up. Perfection is elusive. As a friend says, “If I always chase perfection, I will always fall short, always miss the joy of my accomplishment, always feel ‘less than.’ Why not just let myself be human? give it my best and celebrate that?”
If you still can, pare down your expectations for the holidays. You don’t have to do it all, and it doesn’t have to be perfect. Then think ahead to 2014. Fresh start, clean slate, new resolution: "I’ll celebrate the progress I do make. And often."
- Boxes of junk to sort through? Don’t let the pile scare you: Start with one or two. Progress!
- Tax receipts to organize? Set up a simple system to sort them, maybe just a folder for each category. Progress!
- Bills to pay? Sort by “urgent” and “not urgent” then deal with the most urgent. Progress!
- Whole apartment to clean? Start with just one — wash one window or scrub one cabinet or de-clutter one closet. Progress!
Progress: It looks good, it feels good, and it makes you want to do more. Better than perfection? Absolutely!
