This month, however, I am offering one practical and fool-proof tip to help you get ready for Tax Day.
Why now? April 15 is still three months off, right?
It is, but all employers, banks, and others must mail you your 2013 tax information before January 31, 2014. That means your mailbox will soon be full of tax notices you need to save. Watch for envelopes marked “Important Tax Information Enclosed.” They’re easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
Now for my tip: Label a big envelope “Taxes 2013” and, as those notices come in, drop them in the envelope. That’s it. You don’t have to do anything yet — you don’t even have to open them — just tuck them away for when you do need them.
Really, it’s that easy to start organizing your tax papers. And a little work now will save you (and maybe your tax preparer) a lot of work between now and April 15.
